THE HIKE
Hop on the Desert Classic Trail for a great introduction to the types of trails in South Mountain Park. Complete with rough-and-rocky tread, numerous wash crossings, and enough elevation change to keep it interesting. This trail gives Phoenix-area hikers the ability to get out and experience a beautiful and engaging setting without having to travel far from home.
From the Pima Canyon Parking Area, head south, keeping South Mountain on your right. Just after you leave the parking lot, you'll see the Desert Classic Trail departing from a map kiosk. Stay left as you go by the Marcos De Niza Trail and follow the signs as you continue around the mountain toward the TV towers.
Along the trail, plenty of washes and drainages add variety and fun to the hike, without presenting too much challenge. Keep your eyes peeled for mountain bikers on the trail, as they have been known to love this trail for its relative ease compared to other bikeable trails in South Mountain Park. The west end terminates at the Telegraph Pass Trail.
GETTING THERE
HIKING TIPS
1. Wear trail shoes if you have them due to the rocky nature of the trail and loose gravel
2. Bring and drink enough water throughout the hike – 1-2 Liters will be adequate.
3. Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. During the Summer, starting before 7AM is recommended to avoid the sweltering heat. There is not much shade along this trail.
4. Enjoy the trail! Watch your footing, but make sure to look up from time to time to drink in the panoramic city and boulder sceneries!
5. As always, pack in what you take out! Leave no trace.
